Cape Verde Islands: Maps & Cartography
I have added an overview of Historical Maps of the Cape Verde Islands. My intention is to provide an overview of the cartography history of the Cape Verde Islands. For the island of Santiago the detail vs. correctness of these maps will be shown by identifying the different places on these maps.
The first maps from the Cape Verde Islands date back as far as 1460. The most complete work on this topic most certainly is the 'Portugaliae Monumenta Cartographica', edited by Armando Cortesão and Avelino Teixeira da Mota (1960). Special mention in this area is to be made of Avelino Teixeira da Mota (1920-1982), a Vice-Admiral of the Portuguese Navy who produced many articles, documents and books on the subject.
